What is IP phone ?

  • IP phone is a telephone instrument which works on TCP/IP.
  • It uses CAT 5/6 wiring (which is generally used for LAN networking), rather than RJ-11 wiring which is used in analog phones.
  • So it’s not single PAIR, actually there are 4 PAIRS, as in CAT 5/6.
  • It also comes with optional PoE, which is power over Ethernet, which means you don’t require power plug near IP phone.
    • Even though it works on IP, it is not a VoIP client like SKYPE, Skype phones are different.
    • By itself, it cannot be used to make international calls, it will require IPPBX to connect to.

Some Facts about IP phones:

  • Two IP phones cannot talk to each other without IPPBX.
